Belichick and UNC Part Ways with Offensive and Special Teams Coordinators After Disappointing Season
Bill Belichick's tenure at North Carolina has been marked by a swift decision to part ways with two key coaches following a 4-8 season. Freddie Kitchens and Mike Priefer, who were instrumental in shaping the team's offensive and special teams strategies, have been let go.
Belichick, who took on the role a year ago, made the announcement on Friday morning, citing a desire to bring in new leadership and strategies. In a statement, he expressed gratitude for their contributions but also acknowledged the need for change.
Kitchens, a former member of Mack Brown's coaching staff, was promoted by Belichick to the role of offensive coordinator. However, the Tar Heels' offense struggled, ranking 129th in the nation in total offense. The team's performance was particularly disappointing in the ACC, where they ranked 17th in total offense and 16th in scoring and passing offense.
Special teams also faced challenges, with the Tar Heels finishing in the bottom half of the ACC in kickoff and punt returns, and kickoffs. The team's struggles were further highlighted by Duke's successful fake field goal attempt, which resulted in a victory for the Blue Devils, and NC State's fake punt conversion in the regular-season finale.
The financial terms of their contracts were also addressed, with Kitchens and Priefer being paid out for the remainder of their contracts at their 2025 salary levels. Both contracts included provisions for offset and mitigation if the coaches were to secure new positions elsewhere.
