Bitcoin's Wild Ride: From Record Highs to a Potential 2025 Slump (2026)

Bitcoin's 2025 Rollercoaster May End On A Low: A Year of Turbulence and Uncertainty

The cryptocurrency market, led by Bitcoin, has experienced a tumultuous year, marked by record highs and sharp sell-offs. This volatility is mirrored in the global stock market, where major benchmarks have also seen record peaks followed by sharp declines due to concerns over tariffs, interest rates, and the potential AI bubble. Despite the overall equity market being up year-to-date, Bitcoin's correlation with stock prices has strengthened significantly in 2025.

Analysts at Reuters suggest that Bitcoin's movements are increasingly mirroring stock market sentiment as traditional investors flock to cryptocurrencies. This trend is expected to continue in 2026, with Bitcoin's price more closely tied to factors driving stocks and other risk assets, such as shifts in monetary policy and concerns over the high valuations of AI-related stocks. Jasper De Maere, desk strategist at Wintermute, notes that 'Crypto reacting to broader equities has been a consistent theme in 2025'.

Bitcoin's price has been on a rollercoaster, hitting an all-time high above $126,000 in early October, but then plunging by over 15% in just a few days when Trump announced new tariffs and export controls. This sharp decline led to over $19 billion in liquidations across leveraged crypto market positions, the largest in crypto history. Since then, Bitcoin has struggled to regain its footing, experiencing its biggest monthly drop since mid-2021 in November.

Traders are now assigning a 15% probability that Bitcoin will finish the year below $80,000, down from 20% just a few weeks ago. This outlook is a blow for crypto bulls, including Michael Saylor's Strategy, which projected a price of $150,000 by the end of the year. Standard Chartered analysts forecast a more modest $100,000 by the end of 2025, citing potential flows into Bitcoin exchange-traded funds. The company's CEO, Phong Le, warned of a possible 'bitcoin winter', highlighting the market's uncertainty.

The correlation between Bitcoin and equities, particularly AI stocks, has been growing. AI stocks and Bitcoin share similar speculative attributes and have been affected by concerns over bubble valuations. Historically, Bitcoin and stocks did not move in tandem, but with broader crypto adoption by traditional investors, the correlation is strengthening. In 2025, the average correlation between Bitcoin and the S&P 500 was 0.5, compared to 0.29 in 2024, according to LSEG data.

The tech-heavy NASDAQ 100 index also shows a stronger correlation with Bitcoin this year, at 0.52, up from 0.23 in 2024. Crypto's sensitivity to AI stock moves is partly due to their role as drivers of broader equity markets and their speculative nature, which mirrors that of crypto. Cosmo Jiang, a general partner at Pantera Capital, notes that 'Crypto was already a little weak after October 10, and things really started to break in risk markets in recent weeks due to the AI bull case coming into question'.

The path of interest rates also appears to be influencing cryptocurrencies, similar to stocks. While historical data shows little impact from Federal Reserve rate cuts on Bitcoin prices, some analysts observe that crypto tends to rally with dovish signals from the central bank. Hawkish Fed signals from October onwards have weighed on Bitcoin, and the market now prices an 86% chance of a 25-basis-point cut this week. This rate decision, along with AI stock outlook, will likely be a key driver for crypto prices in the near term, according to analysts.
