Imagine being told that the only medicine that can help your sick baby is unaffordable. This is the heartbreaking reality for one family in Guernsey, who are facing a financial struggle to provide their nine-month-old son, Arnold, with the life-changing medication he needs.
The Financial Burden:
The family was shocked to discover that the medication, which costs £312.70 per bottle and lasts about a month, is not funded by the States of Guernsey. This has left them feeling abandoned and unsure where to turn. "I feel lost. We've tried everything, but we're at a dead end," shared the mother, Kiely Luscombe.
A Race Against Time:
Arnold's condition, dysmotility and hypermotility, causes severe pain and affects his ability to keep food down and have regular bowel movements. The family's desperation is palpable, as they watch their son suffer. "He was in constant pain, crying and arching his back. We had to hold him all the time," Luscombe recalled.
The High Cost of Hope:
The medication, Mebeverine, provided temporary relief, but the family was soon faced with the harsh reality of its cost. "We had no idea it would be so expensive... We're looking at £3,500 a year, which is impossible with six children," Luscombe said. And here's where it gets controversial: despite the urgency, the family was advised to reduce the dosage to make the medication last longer, but this only worsened Arnold's condition.
A Systemic Issue:
The Chief Pharmacist, Teena Bhogal, assures that support is available, but the family feels let down by the system. "We want to help explore alternatives or consider adding medications to the prescribing list," Bhogal stated. However, the family's experience suggests a lack of timely support, leaving them with few options.
A Call for Change:
Luscombe's plea highlights a critical issue: no one should be denied medication due to financial constraints. But is this a systemic failure or an isolated case?
