NASA's Historic Medical Evacuation: Crew-11 Returns from ISS (2026)

NASA's Crew-11 astronauts will return to Earth on Thursday morning after a medical emergency prompted an early return. The Dragon capsule, carrying four astronauts, will undock from the International Space Station (ISS) and splash down in the Pacific Ocean off California. This marks the first medical evacuation from the ISS in its 25-year history, highlighting the challenges of healthcare in space. The affected astronaut's identity remains undisclosed due to privacy concerns.

The evacuation is planned for around 12:40 a.m. PT / 3:40 a.m. ET on Thursday, January 15, following a departure from the station at approximately 2 p.m. PT / 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday, January 14. Weather and recovery conditions will be monitored closely.

NASA officials confirmed that one crew member experienced a serious medical issue, requiring a full diagnostic workup on the ground. The astronaut is currently stable. This 'controlled expedited return' will follow standard landing procedures, ensuring the crew's safety.

Crew-11 consists of commander Zena Cardman, pilot Mike Fincke, Japan's Kimya Yui, and Russia's Oleg Platonov. While Japan's space agency confirmed Yui is not the ill astronaut, the specific affected crew member has not been disclosed.

The early return was announced after NASA canceled a planned spacewalk last week. Fincke and Cardman were preparing for a solar panel project when the medical concern arose. The issue is unrelated to station operations, spacewalk preparations, or work-related injuries.

Following the Dragon's departure, American astronaut Chris Williams, who arrived in November on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft, will be the sole U.S. crew member aboard the ISS until Crew-12 launches in mid-February. NASA assures that the splashdown and recovery process will be well-managed, with flight surgeons and hospitals on standby.
