Imagine spotting the solar system's most far-flung planet, a mere 4.2° northeast of Saturn! This proximity makes it a unique opportunity for sky enthusiasts to locate Neptune, despite its faint magnitude of 7.7.
But here's where it gets tricky: Neptune's disk is tiny, spanning a mere 2" in the sky, and it may deceive your eyes as a dim, flat star. However, pay close attention, and you might detect a subtle bluish-gray tint, a hint of its true nature. And this is the part most people miss—Neptune's subtle motion eastward after tonight, a result of its immense distance from Earth.
To catch this event, start by finding Saturn, the familiar bright light in this sky region, near Pisces' Circlet. Neptune will be within the same binocular field or a few telescope fields, depending on your equipment.
